Tim Seibles, born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, served as Virginia’s Poet Laureate. He’s authored poetry collections like Hurdy-Gurdy, Hammerlock, Buffalo Head Solos, and Body Moves (1988), re-released by Carnegie Mellon University Press in its Contemporary Classics series. Fast Animal was a 2012 National Book Award finalist and won the 2014 Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Award. He received the Pen Oakland Josephine Miles Award in 2013 and an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Misericordia University in 2014. His latest works include One Turn Around the Sun (2017) and Voodoo Libretto: New & Selected Poems (2022). A National Endowment for the Arts fellow, Tim has been featured in anthologies like Black Nature and Best American Poetry (three times in the past decade). In 2015, he chaired the National Book Award poetry panel. He received a 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from The Furious Flower Poetry Center. Tim has led workshops for Cave Canem and the Hurston/Wright Foundation, supporting African American writers. He lives in Norfolk, Virginia, and is an Emeritus Professor at Old Dominion University, where he taught in the English Department and MFA program.
